I’m Really, Really, Really Tired.

Well, the contest has ended and let me just say; what a waste. I guess no one wants to do collages, or wants free Lobster Jaw gear, or whatever.

Anyway, onto not a new post! I’ve been really, really busy and not sleeping and busy this last week so I haven’t had a chance to post, but I’ll give you a sneak preview of an upcoming post.

Two color 23″x17″ hand screenprinted posters by yours truly! Limited edition (only 30); soon to be on sale for $15 at etsy!

In other words, I’ve got finals coming up and summer is on it’s way. Thus, I shall be updating more often than never, so stayed glued to your seats and don’t touch that dial! We’ll be right back after a word from our sponsors.

Hey, if you dig the post and the site, you could always buy me a beer :) ($3 pint maybe? $5 bottle of wine?)

There’s a cForm in my Boot!

CONTEST!

So, I totally messed up and only just now realized that my cForm wasn’t allowing attachments… So, just send a link to the image for submission. The contest will now be going until the 31st because of my mistake. I have no prereq’s for the collages, they just have to be a collage of letters/words/pictures and I’ll accept it. They can be digital or traditional or ink jet collages or screen print or whatever!

I’ll be posting every entry online in a ‘end the contest’ post and everyone who submits a collage will get a Lobster Jaw patch or sticker (your choice!) and a little doodle from me. I wish I had a committee to help me decide a winner, but I don’t; so whichever collage I like the best will the be winner, plain and simple. The winner will receive the fantastic little care package pictured below!

Lobster Jaw swag! A shirt (in your size), a patch and a really really limited edition Lobster Jaw demo. Basement Demo 1 DIY run of only 7 CD’s all hand drawn by our drummer, Jason. Ready. Set. GO!

Adventures in Screen Printing

So, long story short: printed a bunch of Lobster Jaw merch, finished my Creative Symposium piece & had the greatest State of Nature show in my life on the 19th. It’s been a great week and it’s only wednesday!

Long story long:

Last week there was no white thingy on the canvas! Whahappened?! This is the first color of the two-color stencil I spray painted onto my piece to really finish it off.

Done and done! I’m really happy with how the stencil turned out since it was free handed moments before cutting and spraying it. This picture was actually taken at work because I had to finish the piece at work; my last exacto blade broke while I was cutting the 2nd color for the stencil. Luckily I work with another artist (thanks Brandon!) and he had some black spray paint he let me use to finish the piece (just hours before it was to be put in the gallery).

From the entrance of EWU’s Creative Work’s Symposium Gallery. They weren’t too happy that I wanted to hang my canvas sideways; I believe the quote was ‘pain in my ass’.

Here it is, Beautiful Ugly, done and done! But my little panel was done wrong so I replaced it with a little hand drawn one; ten bucks says I catch some flack for that move (totally worth it!)

Ok, moving on… Here’s our burning unit at EWU printmaking studio, it’s amazing. It burns these screens in 175 seconds flat. Done. Then just wash them out and you’re good to go!

Here’s my ghetto t-shirt pallete for printing Lobster Jaw shirts: a cut up piece of cardboard and some spray adhesive to hold the shirts flat.

My DIY setup for Lobster Jaw (and State of Nature) merch: 165 mesh screen, Dick Blick squegee, bowl of water & sponge, paper towls that have been liberated from their dispenser, and some Speedball textile ink in a platic cup.

Test shirt and picture for double checking the positioning of the image. Golden!

After I printed a handful of shirts (and messed up a bunch of shirts trying to do a two color print…) I decided to try and do a two color print on some canvas that my friend Jasen had.

Delicious! This is how all of the shirts were supposed to turn out, but I forgot that I don’t have a real palette and that cotton shrinks when heated; thus my second color didn’t line up at all… my bad…

But it wasn’t a failure! I ended up printing about 8 shirts with this design and 15 with the ‘1/2 of a two color print’ design. So far I’ve traded one shirt to The Grocery Boys for one of their shirts and gave one away to Homeless Ryan.

And we still haven’t even gotten to the best part! Ready? Hold steady… GO!

CONTEST!

I love doing collages; for fliers, for art, on skate decks (see next week’s post!), for Lobster Jaw patches… etc… I want to see your collages! The contest starts now and I’ll be accepting submission until the 27th. I have no prereq’s for the collages, they just have to be a collage of letters/words/pictures and I’ll accept it. They can be digital or traditional or ink jet collages or screen print or whatever!
